- Claiming Solar Credits for small generation units
The Government has announced that small-scale solar PV, wind and hydro electricity systems will be able to receive ‘Solar Credits’ once the expanded national RET scheme legislation passes through Parliament and the required regulations come into force. Solar Credits is a mechanism under the expanded RET scheme which multiplies the number of RECs able to be created for eligible installations of small-scale renewable energy systems. Those wishing to create RECS for systems installed on or after 9 June 2009 may choose to apply for RECs under the current deeming arrangements and apply later for the additional Solar Credits when invited by the ORER. Alternatively, they may choose to delay their application until the Solar Credits regulations are in place.

Mandatory Renewable Energy Target
The aim of the renewable energy target is to increase the production of renewable energy. Under the target, all electricity retailers and wholesale buyers have a legal liability to contribute towards the generation of additional renewable energy. They are called ‘liable parties’, and meet their legal obligation by acquiring renewable energy certificates. More information about the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target
Renewable Energy Certificates
Renewable energy certificates (RECs) can be created when:
- complete solar water heaters are installed
- Renewable energy is produced by small generation units or power stations
To be eligible for renewable energy certificates, solar water heaters and renewable energy generators must comply with certain conditions.
Renewable energy certificates can be sold to agents or liable parties. The price of certificates varies because sellers and purchasers directly negotiate price and payment arrangements. Renewable energy certificates are not a government rebate or refund.
